A lot of the time it would be very difficult to get a response or in contact with the property manager (More on this later) and when he is the only person that you can really talk to when having a question, this posed a problem. On the other hand, when I decided to transfer from MSU to a different school and already signed my lease, he was very helpful and got me out of the lease. The property manger worked very well and was very understanding of my situation and helped me a lot when trying to... get out of my lease. Was very quick, efficient, and nice!
The big problem that came was with my security deposit. It took me over 4 months to get it back. I would call daily and never be able to talk to him, I would email him a lot and never get a response, I'd finally get a meeting and nothing would come of it. I even made an appointment once and then he said that he didn't even know I was coming! They also stopped even answering me after awhile and most likely blacklisted my number because of how many times I'd try to call to get my deposit back. I once called on my phone, didn't get a response, and then called on my girlfriend's phone and got one in two rings. He also lied to me and told me that my former roommate didn't pay 4 months of his rent to try and pin my anger on my roommate instead of him. Even when trying to talk to him about this when I still lived there would be a hassle because he would take a long time to answer or after one of us talked to him, he'd say that he had not talked to the other or just contradict what he told the other.
Another problem on a smaller scale was when our sink clogged and we needed maintenance. It was right before spring break and no one came to fix it for almost two weeks and only came after we kept annoying them about it. I went in to the office one day before break and they said that they would come that day, only to never show up and wait another week and a half.
In conclusion, just be careful when renting here. A lot of the stay was good and very professional, but when it came to issues like money and just getting constant communication with the property manager. It was very unprofessional and even petty at times. The receptionists are very nice and very professional and I have no complaints at all about them. They were honestly more helpful than anyone else! I noticed a lot of others having security deposit issues, so take that into consideration as well.

What I love about living at Red Cedar Flats is I can walk 100 feet to Whole Foods or Trader Joes. I do not have a car and the bus stop is right out front. Now MSU just built a brand new bike and pedestrian trail that can be accessed directly behind the property and takes you in to campus including a new bridge over the Red Cedar River. Management is awesome.

They have loads of parking spots with plenty of empty spaces every day. However, they fanatically tow any car that steps out of line (not registered to them). This apartment complex called in their towing company at 11 pm before to tow 9 cars at the very edges of their lots. Why? Are they getting money for towing more? In my opinion, do not rent here. Rent prices are high and their apartments are not worth that price. If you want to have a car at your apartment, or even have friends over, I... recommend renting elsewhere.

Super good quality for the price! Best place for student living

Red Cedar Flats has been mostly perfect as a student apartment. The gym is one of the nicest of any apartment complex in East Lansing. Beyond that the price is also one of the fairest for how new the apartments are and how updated everything is inside. The only minor drawback is the distance from downtown. It is walkable in the warmer months of the year but in the winter time requires a drive. Other than that Red Cedar Flats has been perfect. The landlord is super understandable with any issues... going on with neighbors or maintenance which is also a perk. I'd definitely recommend these apartments.

Property Manager at Red Cedar Flats responded to this review
We appreciate your input and am glad that we were able to help you break your lease. Without your contact information, we cannot pull up your account to verify your concerns. More than likely, since security deposits are processed within 30 days of... the end of the lease and since you moved out prior to the end of the lease, you would have had to wait until the conclusion of the original lease.
In addition, if your roommate was in arrears, and having signed a joint and several lease, that would also effect the return of your security deposit. We appreciate that you chose Red Cedar Flats and we are always looking for constructive input to constantly evaluate our processes and procedures.
